Why take the EBIR?

The European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR) is a voluntary supplemental examination designed to evaluate interventional radiologists on the clinical and technical knowledge necessary to carry out safe and effective treatments for patients. Although the EBIR certification does not replace any national training or licensing, it does help IRs certify their expertise and demonstrate their ongoing commitment to pursuing a career in this rapidly evolving discipline!

The examination is based on the European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology.

Career development

Sitting the EBIR exam can have a hugely beneficial effect on career development, whether the examination is taken right at the beginning of a tenure or further down the road. Employers can expect not only firm knowledge of the contents of the European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology, which serves as the comprehensive guideline for the exam, but also certain skill sets and additional valuable competencies confirmed by trainers or supervisors.

Sitting the EBIR examination motivated me to study the theoretical side of IR and gain a more complete knowledge of the procedures I perform. Obtaining the EBIR diploma has been an asset to my career development and has made me feel more confident in my abilities as an IR.

Recognised within the international medical community

The first EBIR examination was held in 2010. Since then, more than 1000 interventional radiologists from all over the world have obtained this reputable qualification and this number is steadily growing. In response to an ever-increasing number of applications, particularly from outside of Europe, the examination is now offered in a fully-digital, remote format.

Specialisation

Successfully taking the EBIR can be the first step towards specialisation. CIRSE is also offering an advanced qualification in the field of endovascular therapy – the EBIR Endovascular Specialist Certification. EBIR holders who seek recognition of their expertise and experience in the field of endovascular therapy can find more info and apply for this documented experience certificate.

Comprehensive endorsement

The EBIR is based on the European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology, this document has received the endorsement of many national and regional societies including the ESR (European Society of Radiology). CIRSE is also proud to announce that the EBIR examination obtained UEMS-CESMA recognition in March 2017.

This exercise has been an illuminating and formative experience for the UEMS-CESMA appraisal officials, who have been most positively impressed by the thorough preparation and procedures of the EBIR Examination.

Multiple exam sittings

Remote online-proctored EBIR sittings are held twice per year, with one sitting taking place in spring and the other in autumn.

Clinical involvement and patient safety

The EBIR is committed to ensuring high standards of care and patient safety. Therefore, the exam evaluates candidates based on their clinical skills as well as their technical ones. As stated in the Curriculum and Syllabus, it is crucial for IRs to be familiar with assessing and managing patients before, during and after the procedure, identifying and minimising complications and procedural risks as well as ensuring appropriate aftercare and follow-ups.
